Both American teams bite the dust
Well, what a day it’s been! After the fairytale victory of Laboureur/Sude in the women’s final there was drama by the bucket-load in the men’s quarterfinals.
It’s been a week for the underdog with surprises a plenty at the Poreč Major and guess what? There was another upset, and Canadians Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk – who won silver here 12 months ago – are up to their old tricks again!
All eyes were on smart Major Hamburg winners Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena but there’s obviously something the Canadians like about Croatia as they booked their place in the final four with a superb straight sets victory.
While there was dejection for Brazil following their battle with Austrian’s Doppler/Horst on Center Court, there was joy and pain for equal measure for the remaining two South Americans teams.
And you might have heard of them…Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Evandro Gonçalves and Pedro Solberg. The two powerhouses from the Copacabana went head-to-head in a quarterfinal that would have made a fitting final. Only one team could win, though, and that honor bestowed the world champions.
In the last quarterfinal match on a sweltering day on Center Court, the American dream came to an abrupt end as Latvians Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins silenced Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson in straight sets.
So, after all is said and done, here’s what the semifinals look like:
Doppler/Horst v Saxton/Schalk 11:00 CET
Samoilovs/Smedins v Alison/Bruno 12:00 CET
We think you agree that looks like a damn fine line-up. Join us tomorrow for what promises to be an epic final day for the Poreč Major! Click here for the full schedule.
Thank you from the heart!
