Last year’s bronze medalists edged out on points ratio
The first matches of the Poreč Major on Friday threw up plenty of drama as last year’s bronze medalists Saxton/Schalk were eliminated from the pool play by the narrowest of margins.
Going into the match, all four teams in Pool C were separated by points ratio with Canadians Pedlow/Schachter in the driving seat with a healthier points ratio than their three rivals.
Friday morning’s games pitted Saxton/Schalk against Lucena/Dalhausser of the USA, while Pedlow/Schachter took on Austrians Winter/Seidl – who beat Lucena/Dalhausser on Wednesday.
The first game to finish saw Pedlow/Schachter triumph 21-16, 21-16 in straights – a result which was enough to secure them top spot and a place in the last 16. That meant Winter/Seidl sweated on the result of Saxton/Schalk’s game with Lucena/Dalhausser.
It was the Americans that rose to the occasion on side court 2, winning in straight sets 21-18, 21-17 to secure second place in the pool at a place in the first men’s elimination stage.
Now remember every point counts when it comes to point ratio and the final standings told it the story: Winter/Seidl finished in third place above Saxton/Schalk by a difference of 0.013! That’s how tight it was.
So, we say goodbye to our blog hero Ben Saxton and his partner but don’t worry, they’ll be in the mountains with us in Gstaad!
Thank you from the heart!
