Kozuch in for Kira!
Injury puts pay to Olympic champs’ Croatian chances
Maggie Kozuch, pictured here at the Fort Lauderdale Major, will appear in Poreč after all.
German Olympic champion Kira Walkenhorst can’t make the Poreč Major but fear not beach fans…indoor star Maggie Kozuch will take her place and partner Laura Ludwig.
Injury means Rio hero Walkenhorst will sadly sit out the action in Croatia but Kozuch, who only switched to the sand this summer to link-up with Karla Borger, has jumped at the chance to step in and make her Poreč Major debut.
It means for the second time this season the Olympic gold medalists are unable to compete in a Swatch Major Series event with a shoulder injury ruling out Ludwig of the Fort Lauderdale Major back in February.
Kozuch’s beach career has begun with a number of encouraging performances, with a ninth-place finish in Xiamen in April followed by a top-five finish in Moscow in May.
Laura and Maggie will enter the competition at the pool play stage which begins on Wednesday. The opposition of who they will face will be decided on Tuesday following the completion of the qualification phrase.
