A beach volleyball fan's guide to Porec

The town was made for this tournament

Although beach volleyball comes from the 20th century, the city of Poreč started playing it several centuries before. If you use your imagination, you might notice a beautiful court beneath the walls of Poreč where the old are testing their strength against the new.

As it befits volleyball, teams are separated by a net, or in this case with one of the main streets, Cardo, which is still preserved in its original form. Every move of the players is followed by the ‘referee’ Euphrasian Basilica, one of the most beautifully preserved monuments of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean, which even UNESCO declared as World Cultural Heritage.

The captain of the ‘Old’ team is the Temple of Neptune, which is thought to be the biggest in Istria, although only a portion of its walls and the foundations have been preserved. A second player is Romanic house, very rare example of housing architecture from the Romanic period. The backbone of the defense of the opposite team is a building that is a combination of the Romanesque and Renaissance period called House of the Two Saints. At the service line is a tall Pentagonall tower, a fortification next to where the town gate was once situated.

Working up an appetite? No problem - you have a wealth of superior dining choices in Poreč Saint Nikola where you can find presidents, ambassadors, and other famous faces eating there; a favourite place for Serena Williams in Croatia – Fontana bakery – to pizzeria Nono, a favourite destination for domestic and foreign tourists for many years.

If you aren’t a history-lover, don’t worry because Poreč provides things for visitors with a more adventurous spirit. The name of this sport points to the beach and surely one of the highlights here is waterslides, which you can visit at Aquacolors, the biggest aquapark in Croatia. Beaches in Porec also provide beach volleyball courts, where you can play with your squad like professional Major Series players. But if you want to be able to play like our Major players, you have to be prepared. In the Adventure Park Sky Fox Poreč you can get a closer look at what professional players have to face in their preparation stages because the park offers more than 50 different workouts, the bike polygon and a huge BigFoot. Also, if you may want to experience how it feels to be on the move and to rush from one tournament to another, you should visit the best motordrom in Croatia, located right next to the Adventure Park Sky Fox Poreč.

Finally, the only positive side of being “knocked out” from the tournament is that players can enjoy earlier in the week. So, come to Poreč and party like a pro in some of Croatia’s best night clubs - Byblos, Saint&Sienner, and Palazzo.
